24 Hour Electricians Liverpool - How To Choose The Right Company

Image
In a recent survey, the top three reasons choose an electrician to do their electrical work were to protect themselves from an emergency, to increase the reliability of their home, and to increase the value of their home. The reason for this is quite easy. If your electrician’s work is not completed correctly, they can cause damage to your home and you may end up having to replace it all. On the other hand, if the electrician does a great job and you have no problems with your electricity at all, they can be very loyal and work for many years with you. It is important that when you hire a local emergency electrician , that they are approved. It is good to make sure that your emergency electrician has the proper qualifications before they begin doing any work on your property. This will ensure that you are getting the highest quality service. Another reason that people choose to use an electrician in Liverpool is because they are happy with their service. Electricians hav

LED Lighting

Image
LED Lighting We as electricians have recently started to see a rise in the number of installations using LED lighting, this type of lighting can offer up to 85% cost savings over traditional forms of lighting and is considerably 'greener' than traditional lighting methods. The biggest area we have seen is in the GU10 type of fitting, many homes/businesses having down lights installed and this is an area where major savings can be found, we recently converted a major restaurant to LED, having over 80 fittings within the installations they can expect to make massive savings over the coming years, and the light emitted is much smoother using a mixture of warm white lamps for the seating areas and cool white for the bar/foyer areas. The cost savings are the most obvious reason for installing this type of fitting in your home or business and I would almost certainly recommend anyone to install them for that reason alone. Also the prices of the actual lamps/fittings

Upgrading Consumer Unit

Image
Consumer unit upgrade How Much Does It Cost To Install a New Consumer Unit in Your Home or Premises Here is a guide to installation of a new consumer unit and what should be considered before you have any works carried out at your home. Installation of a new consumer unit There are many reasons to upgrade your consumer unit, maybe your existing unit is of the old rewire able fuses type (and is giving you constant headaches) or maybe you have a more modern type of consumer unit but you have no RCD (Residual Current Device) protection present in your property – more on that later. BS7671 IEE Wiring Regulations state ‘ where a consumer unit is being replaced, additional protection by means of RCD’s should be provided to the extent required by the current regulations BS7671, such as for: · Socket outlets · Mobile equipment for use outdoors · Cables concealed in walls or partitions · Circuits of locations containing a bath or shower Circuits that are to be provided with

Emergency Electricians Liverpool - Electrical Fault Finding

Image
Examples of Electrical Faults We Experience Daily At Orrell Electrics we offer an out of hours emergency call out service, usually no two faults are the same and we are going to include photographs of some of the more extreme electrical faults we come across on a day to day basis as we operate in the area of Liverpool, Merseyside, UK. Faulty main switch: Fire Risk Very Dangerous This particular fault we found to be very serious and there is one real reason for this - inferior goods. There has been an influx of cheap inferior consumer units flood the markets in the last few  years and this is the result of using an inferior product, this installation was only a year old and how this did not ignite is a near miracle! Shower Pull Cords Melted Cables Cables too small This is an all too common fault, usually the shower stops working and the pull cord burning out is the first sign that the cable supplying the shower is too small. Lighting your home in the winter

Outside Lighting Its nearly that time now when the dark nights are closing in and we as electricians start to receive a lot of calls regarding outside lights. It is at this time of year that people start to notice that their outside/security lights are failing. Well this guide will talk you through the various types of lighting that are available: Traditional Tungsten Halogen Fitting These are the most common of 'domestic' outside/security light fittings, usually they come fitting with PIR sensor and are reasonably cheap and you can usually expect to get 12 to 18 months use before they fail or start to blow bulbs. These fittings are usually supplied with 400w bulbs and are pretty average. Recently there have been newer versions of these fittings which will accept low energy bulbs and are more cost efficient long term. LED security lights These fittings are a relatively new concept and are a replacement for the traditional fitting but offer a ultra brig

Consumer Unit

Image
Why you should upgrade your consumer unit Electricity in the home and your garden can be dangerous and potentially cause a fatality, so any work involving the electrics in your home, should be undertaken by a suitably qualified electrician. Orrell Electrics are NICEIC approved electricians and specialists in upgrading consumer units. Back in June 2008, the 17 th edition of wiring regulations - British Standard BS7671 “Requirements for electrical installations” came into force setting out the UK’s national standard for electrical low voltage installations. This improved the safety standard of electrical installations by making it a requirement that almost all electrical circuits that were to be installed into homes from then should be fitted with an RCD ( residual current device ) that provides an extra level of protection over and above that found in the old style of fuse box/board (consumer unit). Old Fuse Box/Board (Consumer Unit) Many homes are still fitted wi

Electrician Liverpool

Electrician Liverpool Electrician Liverpool Orrell Electrics is a local electrician covering Liverpool area Consumer Unit Upgrades Recently Orrell Electrics have carried out several consumer unit upgrades and we have been amazed by the amount of faults we are finding on a daily basis. Some of the better faults include, no earthing present in consumers installations, live ends on cables exposed and hanging in lofts, attics, sheds, garages etc. During an inspection and test of a property we found some faulty reading on the socket outlets and after further investigation we discovered this behind one of the socket outlets This was causing severe problems to the installation with constant tripping of the fuse protecting the sockets. The customer was issued with an 'unsatisfactory' certificate as several issues with the electrics were picked up. Installing Shower Cabling Orrell Electrics have attended several faulty shower circuits in the last few weeks whilst on emergency call outs, all with the same outcome. Our emergency electricians repeatedly reported seeing this issue reoccuring. The cable used to feed the showers has been too small, too many people install 6mm twin and earth when the correct cable should be 10mm twin and earth for the size of the shower in question. Anything below 7.5 Kw is fine for a 6mm cable but above that rating and you need to install 10mm ie a 9.5Kw shower. At first the cable will be fine but over time as the cable is unable to deal with the load it will deteriorate and usually in the process the first signs are a faulty shower pullcord or switch as seen below Notice how the insulation has completely melted away from the copper, this is caused by the cable getting extremely hot as it is not able to handle the current passing through it. You should always examine

Inspection and Testing - Examples of dangerous installations

Image
Orrell Electrics - Electricians Liverpool and Merseyside area NICEIC approved electrical contractors Recently we carried out an inspection and test on a well known public house in Liverpool City Centre, the installation was six years old and had been carried out by an electrical contractor and had been issued with an NICEIC certificate. There were several major problems found on the installation which were very dangerous, the main problem being someone had tampered with the incoming supply and had decided to change how the pub was supplied from a three phase supply to a single phase supply, see images below: So the whole installation was running off a single phase, this includes 4 consumer units and the whole of the kitchen, this type of work could have caused some serious electrical problems and possibly worse could have caused a fire as the cable could have melted/overheated. Also found was a supply for the fire alarm which was fed off the main incoming

Orrell Electrics Electrician Liverpool - Consumer Unit Upgrades Due

Whilst working on an installation today I was replacing a socket outlet for a customer, as I took the socket face off I found the wiring to be unsatisfactory so I investigated further, it turned out the sockets had been connected via the lighting circuit. I had noted to the customer when quoting for the job that the wiring on show around the consumer unit was unsatisfactory but the best was yet to come when I removed the cover from the consumer unit: This is one of the worst installations I have seen for a long time, the consumer unit is a mess and apparently the sockets I was working on were only installed 18 MONTHS AGO!! I was actually half tempted to call the emergency electrician to ask him to explain why he had wired the sockets in lighting cable (1.5mm twin and earth) and why he had used the old red and black wiring colours. Also the lights are wired in single insulated conductors which you can touch as the ceiling is very low in the garage, the customer wa
