Inspection and Testing - Examples of dangerous installations

Orrell Electrics - Electricians Liverpool and Merseyside area NICEIC approved electrical contractors

Recently we carried out an inspection and test on a well known public house in Liverpool City Centre, the installation was six years old and had been carried out by an electrical contractor and had been issued with an NICEIC certificate.

There were several major problems found on the installation which were very dangerous, the main problem being someone had tampered with the incoming supply and had decided to change how the pub was supplied from a three phase supply to a single phase supply, see images below:

So the whole installation was running off a single phase, this includes 4 consumer units and the whole of the kitchen, this type of work could have caused some serious electrical problems and possibly worse could have caused a fire as the cable could have melted/overheated.

Also found was a supply for the fire alarm which was fed off the main incoming supply, a 4mm single cable was bunched with the main incoming 25mm cable which in turn was protected by a 100a main fuse, the fire alarm supply should have been fed off a miniature circuit breaker, a 6 amp MCB to be exact! See the images  below:

This type of shoddy workmanship causes problems for unsuspecting customers and gives the whole industry a bad name.

This is why Orrell Electrics recommend installations should be inspected and tested on a regular basis.
