Whilst working on an installation today I was replacing a socket outlet for a customer, as I took the socket face off I found the wiring to be unsatisfactory so I investigated further, it turned out the sockets had been connected via the lighting circuit. I had noted to the customer when quoting for the job that the wiring on show around the consumer unit was unsatisfactory but the best was yet to come when I removed the cover from the consumer unit: This is one of the worst installations I have seen for a long time, the consumer unit is a mess and apparently the sockets I was working on were only installed 18 MONTHS AGO!! The last couple of days we have been carrying out an installation in a coffee/wine bar in the city centre of Liverpool. The business is under new ownership and is currently having a refurbishment to which we have totally rewired the premises. The main thing I wanted to show is the vintage lighting , there are two chandeliers from a bygone age and they are stunning, they really compliment the feel of the establishment. Today I attended an property to quote for an installation of four outside sockets, from the time I had entered the front door and made it to the back of the house I had spotted several faults within the property. One of the biggest faults I spotted and made the customer aware of was no protective bonding conductor the water at the stopcock, in essence the metallic pipework of the property was not earthed which would be classed as a Code 1 on a electrical installation condition report. Today we attended a customer's home to carry out an electrical installation condition report , the installation was less than three years old and had been wired to the 17th edition IEE wiring regulations BS7671. There was no certification supplied with the original installation and the customer was quite anxious about this, lucky for him it was one of the best decisions he could have made as some of the things found were alarming, we are experienced emergency electricians and deal with electrical issue in Liverpool on a daily basis. We were shocked by some of the things we encountered, one of the protective bonding conductors to the main water stopcock was on the incoming side of the stopcock instead of the outgoing side, in essence the pipework of the installation was not protected in the event of a fault.
