Testing and inspecting electrical fault finding and repairs in Liverpool, Merseyside

Today we attended a customer's home to carry out an electrical installation condition report, the installation was less than three years old and had been wired to the 17th edition IEE wiring regulations BS7671.

There was no certification supplied with the original installation and the customer was quite anxious about this, lucky for him it was one of the best decisions he could have made as some of the things found were alarming, we are experienced emergency electricians and deal with electrical issue in Liverpool on a daily basis.

We were shocked by some of the things we encountered, one of the protective bonding conductors to the main water stopcock was on the incoming side of the stopcock instead of the outgoing side, in essence the pipework of the installation was not protected in the event of a fault.

Secondly the protective bonding conductors had been cut at the gas meter instead of a loop, so in effect if one connection became loose the pipework was exposed to a fault.

We removed the cooker point on the wall to test the cooker feed and the neutral conductor was heavily deteriorated and was showing signs of thermal damage, this connection had been loose since day one and was a major fire risk. The cooker point in question had to be replaced with a shiny new chrome face at considerable cost to the customer.

Also our good old friend spotlights, once again the connections to the fittings were unsatisfactory, single insulated conductors on show which is a major fault and classed as a code two on the electrical installation condition report. The spotlights were not the fire rated type and there was tinder and timber directly above the fittings which get red hot once they warm up. There was a report commissioned recently, have a look at the following link:

Also there was no identification sleeving present at any of the conductors at various lighting points in the installation.

This type of half hearted installation gives the whole industry a bad name, luckily enough there are still plenty of good, hard working professional electricians around.
