Examples of Electrical Faults We Experience Daily At Orrell Electrics we offer an out of hours emergency call out service, usually no two faults are the same and we are going to include photographs of some of the more extreme electrical faults we come across on a day to day basis as we operate in the area of Liverpool, Merseyside, UK. Installing Shower Cabling Orrell Electrics have attended several faulty shower circuits in the last few weeks whilst on emergency call outs, all with the same outcome. Our emergency electricians repeatedly reported seeing this issue reoccuring. The cable used to feed the showers has been too small, too many people install 6mm twin and earth when the correct cable should be 10mm twin and earth for the size of the shower in question. Anything below 7.5 Kw is fine for a 6mm cable but above that rating and you need to install 10mm ie a 9.5Kw shower. At first the cable will be fine but over time as the cable is unable to deal with the load it will deteriorate and usually in the process the first signs are a faulty shower pullcord or switch as seen below Notice how the insulation has completely melted away from the copper, this is caused by the cable getting extremely hot as it is not able to handle the current passing through it. You should always examine
